Geotechnical Analysis and Design
Foundation, retaining structure, slope and temporary works solutions informed by ground behaviour and the practical demands of construction.

Good geotechnical design connects the ground model with loading, movement limits and the way the works will be built. The preferred solution must address the governing mechanism and fit the wider project.
Yarra Geotechnics provides analysis and geostructural design from early option assessment through design development and construction-stage changes. We work with structural and civil designers, contractors and asset owners to define the required inputs, interfaces and deliverables.

Define the problem before selecting the model
We review the available investigation, ground variability, groundwater assumptions, geometry and performance requirements. This establishes whether the information is sufficient for the intended design and where targeted investigation may be needed.
The analytical method follows the engineering problem. Established calculations, limit-equilibrium methods and finite-element analysis each have a role. We use the appropriate level of analysis to examine the controlling behaviour and test the assumptions that materially affect the result.
Geotechnical and geostructural applications
The design scope is tailored to the proposed works, available ground information and responsibilities of the project team.
Foundations and existing footings
Shallow and deep foundation assessment, bearing capacity and settlement, axial and lateral pile behaviour, uplift resistance and assessment of existing footings.
Retaining structures and excavations
Retaining walls, basement shoring, ground anchors, soil nail walls and reinforced soil structures, with consideration of groundwater, movements and adjacent assets.
Slopes and remedial works
Stability assessment of slopes and batters, evaluation of potential failure mechanisms, and development of stabilisation or remedial options suited to the site.
Temporary works and working platforms
Working platforms, crane pads and temporary retaining or shoring systems, assessed against the proposed equipment, loading arrangements and construction stages.
Options that account for construction
A design needs to describe how the required performance will be achieved and the conditions on which it depends.
Assess the alternatives
We consider the feasibility of foundation, retention or stabilisation options against the ground conditions, access, programme and interfaces with other works. Sensitivity to uncertain inputs helps identify where further information has value.
Check the construction stages
Excavation sequence, temporary support, changes in groundwater and the order in which loads are applied can influence performance. These conditions are considered alongside the completed arrangement.
Communicate the design basis
Deliverables may include calculations, design reports, geotechnical parameters, drawings and specifications within the agreed scope. Assumptions, inspection requirements and design interfaces are made clear to the wider team.
Design advice that stays connected to the works
We can undertake a defined design package or provide geotechnical input to another designer’s work. The commission establishes responsibility for each element, the information supplied by others and the checks required before construction.
Construction phase support helps compare exposed conditions and completed work with the design basis. Where conditions or construction methods change, the implications can be assessed and any necessary revision coordinated with the responsible designer.
