Engineering judgement where the work happens

Construction exposes conditions that cannot always be fully described by an investigation. Timely assessment helps the project team understand what those conditions mean for the design and the next stage of work.

Yarra Geotechnics supports contractors, designers and owners through site inspections, testing coordination, geotechnical assessment and documented advice. The service can address a specific activity or form part of a planned programme of construction support.

Field testing provides evidence to assess behaviour against the requirements of the works.

Check the conditions behind the design

Before attendance, we review the relevant drawings, specifications, investigation information and inspection requirements. This gives the field assessment a clear purpose: what needs to be observed, tested or verified, and which decision depends on it.

Site observations are considered against the design assumptions and agreed criteria. Where the information is insufficient or conditions differ, we document the issue and work with the contractor and responsible designer to establish the next assessment or action.

Support across the construction works

The required inspections, testing, attendance and documentation are agreed around the construction activities and programme.

Foundations and piling

Founding-condition inspections, pile construction verification and bearing-capacity assessment, with attention to the ground encountered and the foundation design basis.

Earthworks and materials

Earthworks assessment, proof-rolling observations, material suitability and reuse advice, and assessment of ground improvement. Level 1 or Level 2 arrangements are defined to suit the commission.

Platforms and temporary works

Working-platform and crane-pad assessment, temporary shoring review, and consideration of equipment loads, site conditions and construction changes. Design work is available as a defined scope.

Slopes, anchors and specialist testing

Slope and batter assessment; soil nail and ground-anchor installation and testing support; DCP and plate-load testing; and axial or lateral pile load–displacement testing for solar projects.

When the ground differs from the assumptions

A useful response connects the observation with its engineering significance and the people responsible for the next decision.

Record the evidence

Inspection records identify the location, work observed, encountered materials and relevant testing. Photographs and field notes provide context for the assessment and subsequent review.

Assess the implications

We consider whether the observed condition is consistent with the design basis and what further information is needed. The response may involve additional testing, local treatment, further investigation or review of the design.

Coordinate the response

Recommendations and unresolved items are communicated to the project team. Changes affecting design intent are coordinated with the responsible designer, with follow-up inspection or verification identified where required.

Clear records and a defined role

Deliverables can include site inspection records, technical advice, testing summaries, verification reports and completion documentation within the agreed scope. Where certification is required, its basis, required evidence and extent are established for the particular works.

An inspection, a testing assignment and an ongoing supervision role have different purposes. We agree attendance, hold points, notice requirements and reporting arrangements at the outset so the contractor and design team know what support is included.

For analysis of a changed detail or a new temporary works arrangement, our geotechnical analysis and design service provides the connected design input. Monitoring can also inform an assessment where performance over time needs to be understood.

Plan the geotechnical support for your works

Send the location, current drawings and specifications, existing ground reports, construction stage and programme. Include any inspection, testing or verification requirements so we can define the appropriate support.
