WHEN IT MAY BE REQUIRED

When do you need a Soil Report?

A site classification report, commonly called a soil report, provides the ground information needed for residential slab and footing design. It assesses how the soils may move with changes in moisture and identifies other ground conditions that could affect foundation performance.

The report is generally obtained during the design stage, before the structural engineer finalises the slab and footings. We review the proposed works and available site information to determine the investigation and reporting scope.

01

New homes and townhouses

Site investigation and classification for new dwellings, dual occupancies and townhouse developments, based on the proposed building locations and site conditions.

02

Extensions and additions

Assessment for ground-floor extensions and upper-storey additions. Investigation of existing footings may also be required to inform the structural design.

03

Garages, sheds and other structures

Soil investigations may also be needed for garages, sheds, decks, pools and retaining walls. The assessment is tailored to the proposed structure and its foundation requirements.

ASSESSMENT SCOPE

What we assess

Our investigation considers the proposed development and the ground conditions relevant to foundation design, including:

soil and rock types, layer depths and variation across the investigated area
soil reactivity and potential movement with changes in moisture
fill, soft soils and potential settlement
trees, drainage and existing structures that may affect ground moisture
site slope, earthworks and other conditions relevant to the proposed foundations
suitable founding materials and their bearing capacity.

Investigation methods, depths and any laboratory testing are selected to suit the project and site conditions.

REPORT OUTCOME

Site Classification and foundation recommendations

Yarra Geotechnics prepares a site classification report documenting the investigation findings, borehole logs and relevant test results.

The report provides the site classification in accordance with AS 2870, together with recommendations for suitable founding materials, founding depths and allowable bearing pressures relevant to the proposed works.

These findings give the structural engineer a basis for slab and footing design. Where abnormal ground conditions require particular design measures or further assessment, the report identifies these requirements.

TECHNICAL BASIS

Site classification is undertaken in accordance with AS 2870, Residential slabs and footings, considering soil reactivity and other site conditions that may influence foundation performance.

QUALIFIED PRACTITIONERS

Our reports are prepared and reviewed by appropriately qualified geotechnical engineers, including Chartered Professional Engineers (CPEng) and Registered Professional Engineers of Victoria (RPEV).

VICTORIAN EXPERIENCE

Yarra Geotechnics has experience investigating residential sites across Melbourne and regional Victoria, including reactive clay, sandy soils, filled ground and sloping properties.

PROCESS

How to get started

01

Send the available information

Provide the property address, available plans and any previous soil reports or requirements from your structural engineer.

02

We review and quote

We review the proposed works and site information, then provide a quotation setting out the proposed scope, fee and deliverables.

03

We complete the proposed scope

Once engaged, we complete the field investigation and any testing included in the quotation.

04

We issue the Soil Report

We issue the site classification report and foundation recommendations for use by your structural designer.
